From False Notes, Book 1 of President's Orders, set in the historical U. S. west.

Kirsten sat near the window, watching him with interest. Heaving a sigh, he returned the gun to his jacket and closed the door behind him. He took off his hat and tossed it on the dresser as he walked toward the window. "How did you get in here?"

     Her smile tugged at his heart, and he rolled his shoulders as if that would brush it away. This was not something he needed.
