He didn't say anything on the short walk, but she was aware of his tension. Fortunately, there were very few people about. When the sheriff came down the street, she considered calling out to him, but Simon’s voice rumbled in her ear as if he had known her very thought. "Don't even consider it." He nodded to the sheriff and continued.
Once at the store, he went around the back. She wondered if she should be frightened, but didn't have time to consider it. Reaching out one fist, he thumped on the door and it was opened immediately by Luke. "Nice of you to knock,” he wryly greeted Simon. “What brings you here?"
Simon pushed Kirsten toward a kitchen chair. He could have been a little gentler; she scowled at him, but doubted that he noticed. He seemed to be concentrating on Luke.
"I think I need some answers, and I have a feeling Miss Kirsten can help me."
"Why should I?" She intended to sound firm, but was afraid it sounded more petulant, especially when Simon just gave her his slow smile in response. She blinked once, trying to refocus her thoughts. She wished he wouldn't do that.
Luke cleared his throat. "Coffee?"
Simon gave a brief nod. BeforeKirsten could answer, her stomach gave an embarrassingly loud rumble.
"I take it that's a yes,"Luke said as he set about gathering mugs and reaching for the pot on the stove.
Kirsten nodded without looking at him. "Please."
Once Luke served the coffee, he joined them at the table. "So, why are we all here?"
"I'd like to know that myself," Kirsten said.
